Heroic feats and sacrifice
are better left unsung.
For those who fight too often die,
and often die too young.
Note (November 2023): I wrote this verse in 1984. I recently realized ‘better left unsung‘ is a prominent lyric in the Grateful Dead song Ripple. I don’t recall hearing this song prior to listening to the Jane’s Addiction version when it came out in 1991, but many of my friends in the early eighties were Grateful Dead fans, so the line may be accidentally stolen. Pretty sad to appropriate 25% of a two sentence poem.
You just wrote a poem exactly in the style of A. E. Housman.

Good one! First four line seems so meaningful. I am thinking only the last line is meaningless to me!!
